Upcoming update to the BSRIA Guide: BSRIA BG 29/2011 Pre-commission Cleaning of Pipework Systems

27 September 2011

We are pleased to report that the  BSRIA Application Guide AG 1/2001.1 (2004) also known as 'the flushing guide' which contains recommendations for the design, installation, system flushing and chemical cleaning of pipework systems, is due to be replaced.

BSRIA have announced that BG 29/2011, due for publication on the 19th October 2011, will replace the old flushing guide.

The Guide is intended for use by designers and installers of recirculating heating and cooling systems and incorporates feedback gained from almost 20 years of flushing and cleaning using the existing guide.

Pre-commission cleaning is achieved through a process of flushing and chemical cleaning followed by the addition of suitable water treatment chemicals such as biocides and corrosion inhibitors.

The implementation of energy efficient practices within the HVAC industry, which have led to low water flow rates within pipework systems (due to the use of terminal units with very small control valve orifices), has meant that effective Pre-commission cleaning of pipework has become even more important.

The new guide includes the latest thinking and best practice regarding flushing and cleaning techniques. In particular, it aims to clarify the roles and responsibilities of all parties involved in the process, improve the exchange of information between them and provide consistency of service for water treatment providers.

The new guide covers the following areas:

  • Design considerations
  • Inspection and witnessing
  • Installation considerations
  • System dynamic flushing
  • Chemical cleaning procedure
  • Connections between new and existing systems

We will be providing services in accordance with the latest BG 29/2011 as soon as it is published.
